Do you believe that the current stop and search laws are
enough to deter young people from carrying knifes or other weapons ?

I think they will still carry them. They probably think they won't get caught and even if they did what would happen? Some young people ( and older I expect), believe that if they carry a knife they will be safer if attacked.

Chances are they will not even get caught unless they actually attack someone and if they did get found out they would probably only have it confiscated.

I was always told that what you carry on you could be used against you but now I think the kids who carry them should be put into some kind of boot camp or the equivalent so they think before they take any kind of weapon out of the house.Without the extra deterrent I don't think the stop and search laws are enough I'm in ageement with Alan at the moment.

I agree, they need to a lot further with the punishments when caught, and NO EXCUSE should be accepted, good idea snow, but will they ever do this, unfortunately I dont think so, but im sure some tough army type discipline would definitely work with a lot of them.

What if someone had just been to ASDA to buy a knife to cut their cheese because their knife at home had broke and they were caught walking home with it, you'd shove them in a boot camp? Pfft. Fail.

If carrying a knife can be fully justified, for example, for the reason above, and everything else adds up (IE: You're not in a prime location for knifings, its not 3am in the morning, you haven't been waving it around, its still in packaging, etc etc) then police will most likely let you go on home so long as you're 18 or over as its a legal requirement to be 18 to purchase knifes I believe.

However, if it is found after a stop and search, the police officer would have had reasonable grounds to search you in the first place due to something you were doing, an accusation made against you, or you're acting suspicious, thus if found with a knife it would generally raise suspicion and you will not likely be let off to go home.

packaging isn't always given, same for a receipt, so how are they going to check that?

They won't on the streets.. you'd be arrested pending investigation for holding an offensive weapon. Then they will decide whats the truth and what isn't and either let you go or charge you.

There will be logs in the store of sales, also, if you purchase a knife, ask for a receipt?
