Well it depends on your host. Its not a really good habit to fall into in my opinion. I always use <?php

Also not all hosts support short tags, they also freak with XML's tag.

I know what they are. Short tags suck. Why would setmode include a file? Why not just use include, or require.

Tiaox - Completely wrong on my age ;) Caleb - User defined function in file, that includes that file. Also <? ?> are short tags (along with <?= ?>)
